Requirements for Opening a Basic ATM Savings Account in EastWest Bank

I’ve been planning to open a new savings account, last month. But I got so busy and totally forgot about it. Luckily, I got a little extra time today to go out and decided to inquire at EastWest Bank for the requirements. I intended to open a basic ATM savings account only since I already have a passbook savings account from another bank, which I am very happy with.

Why EastWest and not open the same savings account with ATM in One Network Bank, you ask? Well, EastWest has an online banking facility where I can track my finances while ONB don’t. I guess you get my point.

When I got in EastWest Bank branch near me, I liked that they are not crowded. After asking the requirements, I applied right there and then. The application was fast, the whole process was done in thirty minutes or less, depending on how fast you can fill up the form.

Requirements for EastWest Basic Savings Account with ATM:

  • 2 pcs. 1x1 ID picture.
  • 2 valid government-issued IDs - I showed my passport and PhilHealth ID (make sure you have a photocopy for each of them).
  • TIN number.
  • SSS or GSIS number.
  • Initial deposit - minimum of 100 pesos only.

After filling up the forms, I asked if I’ll get a card with Visa logo – because that’s what I’ve read online. The teller told me, she don’t really know. Then I told her that according to EastWest’s website, the basic savings account will be issued a debit card. She then showed me some ATM cards from her drawer (I’m not sure if they are old ATMs since each of them don’t have the EMV chip), but they don’t have the Visa logo and they only have the Bancnet logo instead. I was a little disappointed and asked why is that.

She then told me that the ATM cards with Visa logo is issued by EastWest unibank. The branch I was in is a rural bank; EastWest rural bank. She told me they are different in some ways. All I could say was “ah okay”.

Anyway, the application was easy. The staff were accommodating and helpful. Overall, I am very happy with my new bank.

I need to come back to my branch after two weeks to claim the ATM card. The teller who assisted me wasn’t really sure if the ATM card will have a Visa logo or not, so I am still hoping that I get a Visa card. That would be very helpful for my online transactions.

Will update you about that.
